Christian Carey is an interdisciplinary researcher with a background in engineering, economics and policy. His PhD studies consider the opportunities for ‘Laser forming of fibre metal laminate’, an advanced shaping method for aerospace composites.
Since joining the Smith School in the role of aviation expert, Dr Carey authored a number of chapters in the ‘Future of Mobility Roadmap’ and published a number of articles and opinion pieces in leading industry journals. He is currently in the process of authoring a chapter on the topic of low-carbon aviation for a forthcoming book in Springer Scientific Publishing’s Energy Series. He has also been involved in a number of external projects including as an academic advisor on the Civil Aviation Authorities ‘Future Airspace Strategy’, a policy document which sets out the plan for the future of Britain’s airspace.
Dr Carey’s research interests encompass the whole transport sphere, involving the restriction of resources, transport technology, governance, economics and the politics of transportation in the 21st century. Specific areas of study include the application of advance manufacturing technology, lighter-than-air systems, the effect of delay in technology up-take on transport emissions and the cost of restricted infrastructural capacity on emissions.
His current role within the school is as a member of the Climate and Development Centre, working on the National Climate and Low Carbon Development Strategy Project for Rwanda. In this role Dr Carey is developing a holistic transportation and built environment roadmap for climate resilient and low carbon economic growth in Rwanda.
