Professor Gregg Butler

  

Professor Gregg Butler, Co-Director of Integrated Decision Management Ltd (Nuclear Fuel Cycle Consultancy) and Professor of Science in Sustainable Development, University of Manchester

Gregg Butler was born in London in 1946, brought up in South Wales, and lives in Lancashire.  He read Metallurgy at University College Swansea, completing a PhD on uranium metallurgy in 1971.  He worked for British Nuclear Fuels plc in a variety of  posts covering R+D, planning, commercial, plant and general management, in areas covering fuel manufacture, centrifuge enrichment, reprocessing, waste treatment and disposal.  He was Deputy Chief Executive from 1993 until taking voluntary severance from BNFL in 1996.  He was a Director of UK Nirex from 1990-1994, Chairman of Westlakes Scientific Consulting from 1993-2000, and MD of Pangea Resources Australia Pty Ltd through 1998/99.  He was heavily involved in the BNFL National Stakeholder Dialogue (1998-2005), and was a member of the UK Government’s Radioactive Waste Management Advisory Committee from 1992-2004.

He co-directs Integrated Decision Management Ltd, which offers consultancy services, mainly in the nuclear sector, assembling small project teams from a highly qualified, experienced and motivated network.   Recent and current clients include the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, the Department of Energy and Climate Change, the Health and Safety Executive and Nuclear Installations’ Inspectorate, the Committee on Radioactive Waste Management, the Ministry of Defence, Cumbrian Local Authorities, Sellafield Sites Limited and some of the new nuclear build consortia.

He is also Professor of Science in Sustainable Development at the University of Manchester.  He is involved in the Dalton Nuclear Institute and has published many papers on nuclear energy and radioactive waste related issues.
