Will there be room for aviation in a low carbon future?
Thursday 3rd June (16.00 – 17.00)
Tim Johnson (Director, Aviation Environmental Federation)
Will there be room for Aviation Presentation
Summary: With demand for aviation set to grow significantly over the coming decades, does the associated growth in emissions challenge our ability to achieve a low carbon future? A recent report by the Committee on Climate Change suggests that, taking into account improvements in efficiency and other measures in the aviation sector, the UK’s 2050 climate goal can be realised only if the predicted growth in air traffic is constrained below forecast levels. The seminar will look at the past and future growth of the sector, the scientific rationale for tackling aviation’s greenhouse gas emissions, and the current and emerging regulatory landscape. It will focus on the abatement opportunities including the future outlook for technology and alternative fuels, and consider to what extent localised production and consumption, increases in videoconferencing and overland travel, or taking fewer foreign holidays, can contribute to the solution.
Personal Biography: Tim Johnson is the Director of the Aviation Environment Federation (AEF). Established in 1975, the AEF is the principal environmental association in the UK concerned specifically with all the environmental effects of aviation. The Federation’s membership comprises residents’ groups, amenity and environmental organisations, and local authorities around the UK’s airports and airfields. Tim has been working in the national and international aviation environmental policy field for twenty years, as a representative of the environmental sector and as a consultant. In addition to representing the AEF on Government and European Commission working groups, Tim is the environmental NGO’s Observer at meetings of the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (including being on its recent task forces addressing emissions trading and charges, it’s Market Based Measures Task Force and as chair of the ICAO Aviation Carbon Calculator Support Group).
