Peter Betts joined the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment as an Honorary Research Associate in January 2019. Before joining, he was a UK civil servant for nearly 35 years, working in a wide range of Government Departments, including BEIS/DECC, MHCLG, HMT, FCO and DFT. From 2008 until 2018 he was Director with overall responsibility for UK international climate policy, leading on the UNFCCC negotiations (in which he was also lead Negotiator for the European Union for 6 years up to 2016) and bilateral engagement, and was responsible for an Official Development Assistance programme worth around £3bn. From 2016 he was also responsible for international energy. He is currently playing a number of think tank and private sector roles, and is chairing the International Advisory Group of the UK Climate Change Committee.
