Mathias Weidinger

Research Assistant

Profile

Mathias Weidinger is a research assistant in Climate Compatible Growth at the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment and also contributes to the Resilience and Development research theme at the Environmental Change Institute. In this capacity, he supports work on sustainable finance interventions that promote economic development while addressing the social and economic risks associated with climate change and biodiversity loss.

His research interests lie at the intersection of environmental and development economics with a methodological focus on policy evaluation, microeconomic theory, inferential statistics, and spatial data. He is particularly interested in policies that jointly address environmental sustainability and human development in lower- and middle-income country contexts; for example, by strengthening resilience in local communities, investing in biodiversity and ecosystem services, and promoting a climate just, pro-poor transition towards (and beyond) net-zero.

Mathias received his B.A. in European Studies from the Maastricht University in 2018, an M.Sc. in Public Policy and Human Development jointly awarded by UNU-MERIT and Maastricht University in 2021, and an M.Sc. in Economic and Financial Research from Maastricht University in 2023. Before coming to Oxford, Mathias formed part of the Development Economics Group at ETH Zurich, where he supported various research projects and served as a teaching assistant in graduate-level econometrics.
