Tushar Babbar

Data Lead - State of Carbon Dioxide Removal

Profile

Tushar Babbar is a Data Lead for the State of CDR at the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment, University of Oxford, where he builds the digital backbone for cutting-edge research at the intersection of sustainability, climate policy, and enterprise. He leads the design of scalable data infrastructure, sharpens user experience across platforms, and ensures data quality through rigorous governance frameworks. His work doesn’t stop at the backend—he also helps shape strategic outputs, from academic publications to grant proposals and interactive data storytelling.

With nearly four years of hands-on experience in data analytics, he brings a rare combination of technical depth, commercial sensibility, and creativity. His journey spans environmental finance, predictive modelling, and data systems optimization—most notably in his time at AlliedOffsets, where he was instrumental in pioneering one of the world’s first carbon credit price estimation models and a project liquidity score algorithm. These tools have been pivotal in enhancing market transparency and reshaping how investors evaluate carbon assets.

Tushar holds an MSc in Data Analytics from the University of Warwick, a Postgraduate Diploma in Data Science and Business Analytics from the University of Texas at Austin (in collaboration with Great Lakes Institute), and a BSc in Computer Science from St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi. He also holds certifications in Generative AI, Large Language Models, and Responsible AI from Google, and is an active member of both the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (UK) and the Institute of Actuaries of India.

Beyond credentials, it’s curiosity that drives his work—curiosity about how systems behave, how evidence can challenge assumptions, and how technology can shape better futures. He’s particularly passionate about using data to tackle climate and equity challenges and enjoys building tools that make opaque markets clearer and fairer.

Tushar shares his thoughts on data science and sustainability through his Medium blog, writing about everything from carbon market analytics to AI tools for researchers. Outside the data world, he’s a competitive athlete—a former national-level badminton player in India and currently active in London’s Division 3 badminton league. During the 2022 Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham, he served as a team leader, overseeing operations for over 2,500 attendees and managing a team of 75 volunteers.

Whether building carbon finance models, leading tech for research impact, or serving in high-stakes sporting environments, Tushar brings clarity, structure, and purpose to every challenge he takes on.
