Profile
Alex is a Principal Investigator on the FCDO-funded Climate Compatible Growth (CCG) programme, which supports the mobilisation of investment to meet development priorities in the global south. A former fund manager, he has over 25 years of experience in finance, enterprise and academia. Concurrently, Alex is Founder in Residence at the Smith School, where he works with students and staff to support for-purpose entrepreneurship. He also teaches on various undergraduate, postgraduate and executive education courses within the department, and supervises a small number of doctoral students. In addition, he contributes to other core programmes at the School, including sustainable finance, enterprise, water and food.
Separate to his part-time university commitments, Alex runs Watermarq, an early stage firm working on new approaches to valuing water. His other external appointments include Chief Investment Advisor to the Africa Water Investment Programme, Member of the Global Water Partnership's Technical Committee, and Court member of the Worshipful Company of Water Conservators. Alex holds a master's degree with distinction in water science, policy and management, and a doctorate in water risk; both from the University of Oxford.
Projects
Teaching
Alex established and runs the department's option on Sustainable Development in Practice, for second and third year undergraduate students. He teaches on the MSc in Sustainability, Enterprise and the Environment, and the MSc in Water Science, Policy and Management. Alex also co-directs and teaches on various executive education programmes run by the Smith School.
