Climate and Nature Under Fire: Environmental Governance in a Fragmented World

Oxford University’s flagship event on enterprise and the environment will convene 150 exceptional leaders from policy, business, civil society, and academia. Designed to foster meaningful relationships, break down silos, and cultivate a collaborative global community, the programme empowers participants to drive a just and sustainable transition.

In an era marked by increasing polarisation, political turmoil, and systemic inequalities, the twin crises of climate change and nature degradation expose the inadequacy of global governance systems. This conference will explore how states, corporations, and civil society must navigate these challenges to achieve meaningful and equitable progress.

Opening panel: Diverging Paths: Global Environmental Action in a Fractured World

The 2025 World Forum opened with a panel discussion on how despite geopolitical tensions, global environmental action continues to move forward in most parts of the world, with countries viewing the green transition as a transformative opportunity to improve peoples’ lives. Recent figures on record-breaking expansions of renewable capacity continue to support this. Moving forward, the benefits of addressing nature and climate will need to be thoughtfully communicated through clear leadership and messaging, and policy measures which ensure that people feel its immediate benefits 'on their bills'. Subsequent panels explored different levels at which environmental governance has continued to operate and move forward, and likely future directions.

Oxford debate: This House Believes That Chinese Technology is the Key to A Global Green Transition

The Forum closed with a lively Oxford Debate on the Motion: this House believes that Chinese technology is the key to a global green transition. In the spirit of the traditional Oxford Debate, teams argued for or against the Motion, which it should not necessarily be assumed represented their own personal views. Arguments explored the balance between ensuring a rapid and affordable green transition, and addressing concerns over concentrated supply chains, trade and security.
